1. Toilet paper packaging
The highest-frequency purchase in most bathrooms, and almost universally wrapped in plastic film with a plastic outer bag on multi-packs.
Paper or compostable wrapping removes that entirely, and because the purchase is habitual rather than considered, one decision locks in the improvement permanently. There is no ongoing discipline required, which is rare among environmental swaps and is the main reason this one sticks.
2. Bar and solid formats
Bar soap, shampoo bars and conditioner bars replace pump bottles and tubs, and the packaging drops to a paper band or nothing.
Liquid soap is mostly water, so a large share of what a bottle contains is a substance already piped into your bathroom. Removing the water removes the container and most of the shipping weight at the same time.
Shampoo bars have a genuine adjustment period of roughly one to three weeks while the scalp adapts, and hair can feel heavy during it. What actually counts as a good swap?
Four tests, and a lot of eco-branded products fail at least one.
Single material beats mixed material. A steel blade recycles. A plastic cartridge with a steel strip and a lubricating pad does not. Anything combining polymers, metals and adhesives in one small object is heading to landfill regardless of the bin it goes in.
Durable beats disposable, if it actually lasts. A reusable item only pays back its higher manufacturing footprint if you keep using it. A drawer of abandoned reusables is worse than the disposables it replaced.
Less packaging beats better packaging. Compostable packaging is preferable to plastic, and no packaging is better than both.

How do you spot greenwashing in this category?

A related trap is assuming a plastic-free product is also a clean-ingredient product. Those are separate questions with separate answers, and the clean-ingredient alternatives worth choosing are not always the ones with the least packaging.
What is a realistic sequence?
Replace things as they run out. Do not bin working products to buy better ones, because throwing away a half-used bottle to buy a bar is a net loss on every measure including waste.

- Toothbrush. Replace at the next three-month mark.
