That is the baseline both alternatives improve on. Everything below is a comparison between two improvements, not between a good option and a bad one.
How does bamboo actually perform?
Well on land use and fibre renewal, less clearly on carbon than its marketing suggests.
Bamboo is a grass, part of the subfamily Bambusoideae within the grass family Poaceae, and it regrows from an underground rhizome system after cutting. That means no replanting cycle and no soil disturbance from felling, which is a genuine structural advantage over timber.
What the growth-rate claims get wrong
You will see "35 inches in a single day" repeated everywhere, including in the previous version of this article. That figure is close to the record. Reference data on bamboo puts the maximum at around 91 centimetres, or 36 inches, in 24 hours, with a Japanese giant timber bamboo reaching 120 centimetres.
Typical growth for commonly cultivated species is 30 to 100 millimetres per day during the growing season. That is roughly one to four inches, not thirty-five. Harvest maturity is about three to seven years.
The honest version is still impressive next to 30 or more years for timber. Quoting a world record as though it were ordinary is the kind of claim that undermines everything else on the page.
Where bamboo genuinely wins
No forest fibre, no replanting cycle, no clearcutting, and a fibre long enough to make strong paper without heavy chemical reinforcement, which is why unbleached bamboo can skip the wet-strength resins that short-fibre papers depend on. Bamboo also stores substantial carbon while growing, in the range of 100 to 400 tonnes per hectare.
The claims worth dropping are the ones about producing 35% more oxygen and having natural antimicrobial properties survive into the finished sheet. Neither is well supported, and the second has been the subject of regulatory enforcement in the US.
The transport question, honestly
Most commercial bamboo is grown and milled in Asia, so a roll sold in the US or Europe has travelled a long way. This is the standard objection to bamboo and it deserves a straight answer rather than the usual dismissal.
Shipping is genuinely a smaller share of a tissue product's footprint than manufacturing is, because ocean freight is efficient per tonne-kilometre and tissue is light. On its own, the sea leg is not what decides this comparison.
What the NC State work shows is that the objection was aimed at the wrong part of the journey. The emissions problem with Asian-manufactured bamboo tissue is the electricity used at the mill, not the container ship. That reframes the argument rather than settling it, and it means "made locally" and "made cleanly" are not the same claim.

Recycled tissue uses paper that already exists, which sidesteps the raw material question completely. Reference data on paper recycling puts energy savings between 40% and 64% depending on the source, emissions at roughly 70% of virgin production, and cites EPA figures of 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution than making virgin paper.
Those are meaningful numbers and they are frequently understated by brands selling the alternative.
What de-inking really involves
De-inking is the step that makes recycled tissue possible, and it is genuinely chemical. The most common bleaching agents used on recycled pulp are hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydrosulfite.
Note what that is not. The claim that de-inking "often" uses chlorine-based bleaching appeared in the previous version of this article and is not what the reference sources describe. Peroxide bleaching does not produce organochlorine byproducts, which is the concern people are usually reaching for when they raise this.

The numbers
Researchers at North Carolina State University published a lifecycle assessment in Cleaner Environmental Systems in September 2025 comparing Chinese bamboo tissue with US and Canadian wood-based tissue. Chinese bamboo tissue came out at 2,400 kg CO2eq per ton against 1,824 kg for US wood-based tissue, and bamboo also ranked worse on smog formation, respiratory effects and ecotoxicity.
That is a peer-reviewed result pointing the opposite way to almost every bamboo brand's marketing, including, in its previous version, this page.
Why the grid beats the fibre
The cause is not bamboo. Lead researcher Naycari Forfora attributed it to China's coal-dependent power grid raising emissions across the entire tissue supply chain. Co-author Ronalds Gonzalez put it bluntly: the technology used to make hygiene tissue matters far more than the type of fibre it is made from.
The implication is specific and actionable. Bamboo grown and milled in a region with clean electricity would produce a very different result. The fibre is not the variable that decides this, the energy is.
What that does and does not change
It does not undo bamboo's land-use case. Boreal forest that is not logged is still not logged, and that benefit is unaffected by how the mill is powered.
It does mean that "bamboo is better for the planet" is too broad a claim to make without knowing where a roll was made. Anyone selling bamboo tissue on carbon alone, without disclosing manufacturing location and energy source, is asking you to take the most contested part on trust.

So which should you buy?

Choose recycled if waste diversion is your priority, you want the shortest transport chain, or you want the option with the strongest pollution-reduction figures. It is a genuinely good environmental choice and the tissue industry needs more of it.
Choose bamboo if ending demand for forest fibre is your priority, you want to avoid contaminants inherited from recycled feedstock, or texture matters to you and you have found recycled paper too coarse to stick with. Either beats conventional. That is the part worth holding onto. The gap between virgin forest fibre and both of these options is far larger than the gap between them.
Why recycled often feels coarser
This is a fibre length problem rather than a manufacturing failure, and it is worth understanding because it drives whether people stick with the switch.
Each pass through the recycling process shortens the fibres. Shorter fibres bond into a rougher, less uniform sheet, and they shed more loose material in use. Manufacturers can compensate with additives, but doing so undercuts the reason many people chose recycled in the first place.
Bamboo runs the other way. The fibre is long to start with, so the sheet holds together without chemical reinforcement and feels smoother without added softeners. That is a genuine material difference rather than a marketing line, and it is the main reason people who abandoned recycled tissue often stay with bamboo.
The option nobody selling toilet paper mentions
Use less of it.
The largest environmental lever in this entire category is total consumption, and neither fibre choice touches it. Adding water, whether through a bidet attachment or a simple rinse, cuts paper use dramatically, and pairing that with any low-lint paper for drying beats optimising the fibre while using the same amount.

What should you ask a brand before believing the claim?
Four questions, and most brands will fail at least one.
- Where is it manufactured, and on what electricity? After the NC State result, this is the single most informative question about a tissue product's carbon footprint. A brand that will not say has told you something.
- Is the fibre certified, and certified for what? Forest certification covers sourcing and chain of custody. It does not test the finished product for chemical residues, and brands routinely imply it does.
- For recycled, what is the post-consumer percentage? "Recycled" without a number can mean pre-consumer industrial trim, which diverts far less. Look for a stated post-consumer figure.

A brand that answers all four clearly is worth more of your trust than one with a better-looking claim and no detail behind it. The same logic applies to forever chemicals elsewhere in the bathroom: what a manufacturer can account for tells you more than what it advertises.
