Where does PFAS actually come from in a bathroom?
PFAS enter bathroom products three ways: deliberate addition for water and stain resistance, coatings applied during manufacturing that transfer to the product, and contaminated recycled feedstock carried in from elsewhere.
The family itself is enormous. EPA's chemical inventory now lists more than 14,700 distinct PFAS substances, all sharing the carbon-fluorine bond that makes them resistant to heat, water, oil and biological breakdown. That stability is the whole point industrially and the whole problem environmentally.
In a bathroom the deliberate uses cluster in a few places: long-wear cosmetics, water-resistant formulations, and anything sold on a "glides smoothly" or "stays put" promise. On the relative size of those, ATSDR states plainly that research has suggested exposure to PFOA and PFOS from today's consumer products is generally lower than exposure from PFAS-contaminated drinking water.
What the numbers look like side by side
One study makes the comparison unusually concrete. Researchers publishing in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology measured serum PFAS in 178 women alongside their habits, and found flossing with a PTFE-coated floss associated with 24.9% higher PFHxS. In the same study, living in a city served by PFAS-contaminated water was associated with roughly 100% higher PFOA and PFHxS, and eating prepared food from coated cardboard containers with increases of 45% to 124% across four compounds.
So the floss effect is real and measurable. It is also roughly a quarter the size of the water effect.
Why that does not make bathroom swaps pointless
Two reasons. First, these exposures add rather than compete, so removing a 25% contributor is a genuine reduction whatever else you do. Second, bathroom swaps are cheap, permanent and require no ongoing effort, which is not true of most exposure reduction. Replacing a floss once is easier than relitigating your water supply.
The point is sequencing, not dismissal. Do the big thing first, then clear the small ones because they cost you almost nothing.

Cosmetics and long-wear products

Daily use over years makes this a meaningful category despite each application being small.
Toilet paper, in proportion
PFAS in tissue is genuine and it is small. The peer-reviewed measurement, published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, found disubstituted polyfluoroalkyl phosphates, mainly 6:2 diPAP, at parts-per-billion levels, and estimated that toilet paper contributes roughly 4% of that compound in US and Canadian sewage.
Note the compound. Much of the coverage of that study names fluorotelomer alcohols, which is not what the researchers reported. The distinction matters if you are trying to check a claim against the source.
The route that is worth acting on is feedstock. Recycled tissue inherits whatever coatings were on the packaging and printed stock that went into the recycling stream, while virgin fibre does not. Period and continence products
This category is newer to the conversation and worth knowing about. Reusable period underwear has been the subject of PFAS testing and litigation in the US, on the basis that fluorinated chemistry can be used to achieve the leak resistance the product is sold on. Some manufacturers have since committed to fluorine-free construction.
The reasoning is the same as everywhere else in this article. When a textile product promises to stay dry on one side while absorbing on the other, water-repellent chemistry is one obvious way to deliver it, and that is exactly the performance profile fluorinated compounds were designed for. Bar soap, shampoo bars, plain moisturisers, toothpaste, razors and towels are rarely PFAS concerns. Swapping them for the same reason wastes effort and money. If you want to swap them for other reasons, fine, but do not count it as PFAS reduction.
What do the health effects actually look like?
Serious enough to justify reducing exposure, and less certain than most articles suggest.
The EPA's current position associates PFAS exposure with reproductive effects including decreased fertility and raised blood pressure in pregnancy, developmental effects in children, increased risk of prostate, kidney and testicular cancers, reduced immune response including weaker vaccine response, interference with natural hormones, and raised cholesterol.
The same page is candid about the limits. There are thousands of PFAS with varying toxicity, most studies examine only a handful of the better-known compounds, and specifying effects is difficult because exposure pathways, life stages and product uses have all changed over time.
On cancer specifically, the International Agency for Research on Cancer moved PFOA to Group 1, carcinogenic to humans, and classified PFOS as Group 2B, possibly carcinogenic. Older articles still describe PFOA as only a possible carcinogen, which understates the current classification.
What none of this establishes is that a specific product produces a specific illness. The reasonable position is that these are persistent compounds with credible harm signals, total body burden is what matters, and reducing controllable inputs is sensible risk management rather than treatment.
Does any of this matter more during pregnancy or childhood?
Yes, and it is the one situation where moving faster is justified rather than merely tidy.
The EPA's list of associated effects includes developmental effects and delays in children, low birth weight, and reduced vaccine response, with children specifically named in the immune findings. Developing systems are more sensitive to endocrine-active compounds than adult ones, and the exposure window matters as much as the dose.
That does not change the ranking. Water is still the largest lever, and filtering the supply a household drinks and cooks with does more for a pregnancy than any bathroom swap. What changes is the threshold for acting on the smaller items: if you were going to replace the floss and audit the cosmetics eventually, this is a reasonable moment to just do it.
It is also a moment to be sceptical of marketing that leans on the same anxiety. Products aimed at new parents carry a price premium precisely because the worry is reliable. Check the same signals you would check for anything else, and do not pay extra for a claim that has not been tested.
How do you identify PFAS in a product you cannot test?

What order should you make the swaps in?
Highest return first. This sequence assumes a normal household budget and finite patience.
- Check your water supply, and filter if needed. Largest single lever by a distance. Certified reverse osmosis or activated carbon filtration addresses most of it.
- Replace PTFE-coated dental floss. Cheapest meaningful swap in the bathroom, with the clearest published association.
- Audit long-wear and waterproof cosmetics. Focus on daily-use items rather than the occasional product.
- Reduce coated food packaging. Technically a kitchen job, but it outranks everything remaining in the bathroom.
- Switch to virgin-fibre unbleached toilet paper. Small on PFAS alone, though it removes fragrance, dyes and bleaching chemistry at the same time, which is where most of its value sits.

What does not reduce your PFAS exposure?
Three moves that feel productive and are not.
Switching to recycled paper products for PFAS reasons. Recycling is the contamination route, not the fix. Recycled paper is a good environmental choice for other reasons, but it is not the low-PFAS choice.
Assuming "natural" or "organic" means PFAS-free. Neither term covers fluorinated chemistry, and neither is tested for it. This is the same trap as assuming "fragrance-free" labelling guarantees a low-allergen product.
Believing skin contact with dry paper is a major uptake route. Perianal skin is thin and permeable, which is a good reason to keep contact products simple. It is not the same as demonstrating meaningful PFAS absorption from a few seconds of dry contact, and no study has shown that.
